Is the Cartel Shield a Crisis for the Constitution?
According to Sheinbaum’s government, the reforms are essential for the defense of Mexico’s independence. However, detractors say the changes are more about protecting the interests of strong criminal groups than they are about fostering national pride. In their continuing litigation against U.S. gun makers, Mexico has bolstered their case with this reasoning. Smith & Wesson and Colt are among the corporations named in the multibillion-dollar case that was initially launched in 2021. The plaintiffs claim that the firms’ lack of strict regulation has allowed firearms to enter Mexico. Under Sheinbaum’s leadership, the litigation will be expanded upon, to expose American culpability in the brutality perpetrated by cartels.
Encouraging Cartels Despite Their Irony
Some have backed Sheinbaum’s statements criticizing American gun manufacturers, but her attempts to shield cartels have cast doubt on her motives. I don’t understand why her administration is passing laws to protect cartels from accountability if they are terrorists, as she claims. Skeptics contend that what Sheinbaum has done exposes a more disturbing truth: the Mexican government might be influenced by the cartels it professes to fight against.
The Mexican government is owned by the cartels, according to one political analyst. “The interests of the cartels are protected by Sheinbaum’s policies, not Mexico.” Many Mexicans share this view, having been disillusioned with their government’s refusal or incapacity to combat cartel violence. Cartels have infiltrated every level of society and hold tremendous power, despite decades of pledges to combat organized crime.
Prohibition of U.S. Intervention
Her brave step has been to forbid the United States from interfering in Mexico’s war against cartels. Critics in the United States have slammed the move, claiming that international collaboration is key to stopping drug trade and violent crime.
